What is Pilates?

Pilates is an innovative system of mind-body exercise evolved from the principles of Joseph Pilates. He devised his system of exercise, which he named ‘Contrology’ when he was interned in a British internment camp on the Isle Of Man during the First World War.

His influences came from yoga, martial arts,
and ballet. After the war, he went to New York where, with his wife Clara, he set up the first Pilates Studio next to the New York City Ballet. They worked into the mid-’60s leaving a huge legacy of mat and studio work which form the basis of how Pilates is taught today.

Stott Pilates ( is a contemporary,
anatomically-based approach to Joseph Pilates original method. It incorporates modern exercise science and rehabilitation principles as a safe and effective, low-impact way to stretch and strengthen the body.

What can Pilates do for you?

The original principles of Joseph Pilates: concentration, control, precision, centering, flow and breathe facilitate a quality of movement that allows the client to develop a closer mental connection with their bodies. Breathing and movement are performed with intention. By increasing body awareness, benefits are accrued in many areas both physical and mental:

It can be modified to be more challenging or gentle depending on the exercises and progressions that are used.
